How to Prevent & Treat Cavities in Toddlers
Your toddler’s smile brings you a lot of joy. However, if you are worried your child might have a cavity, their smile might be a source of stress. Even though your toddler will eventually lose their baby teeth, it is important to take care of those teeth. Prevention of cavities is key.
Read on to learn more about the causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of toddler cavities.
Causes of Cavities in Baby Teeth
Cavities are tooth decay, but are largely preventable with proper care. A cavity can form when a buildup of plaque eats at the tooth enamel creating a hole in the tooth.
Not Brushing and Flossing Enough
If you do not brush or floss your toddler’s teeth frequently enough, cavities may develop. It is important to brush teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. If your toddler eats sugary or sticky foods, it is a good idea to have them drink some water then brush 30 minutes to an hour after that meal, no matter how small it was.
Sugary Diet
Sugary treats, simple carbs, and sugary beverages create the ideal environment for cavities to form. Toddlers need a balanced, nutritious diet to grow big and strong and keep their teeth healthy. Overall, it’s best to have them avoid sticky, sugary foods.
Using a Bottle
Toddlers who sleep with bottles have a very high risk of developing cavities. Decay from using a bottle at night usually shows up in the middle front two teeth.
Genetics
Some toddlers may have a genetic factor like weak enamel that makes their teeth more vulnerable to cavities. Regular dental checkups are important for preventing and catching cavities early.
Symptoms of Cavities in Toddlers
Sometimes cavities do not create any noticeable symptoms, the symptoms may be subtle, or your toddler may not be able to clearly communicate what they are feeling. When you brush your toddler’s teeth, look closely at their teeth. You may be able to notice visual signs of cavities. If you notice any of the following symptoms, talk to a dentist:
White Spots on Teeth - A very early sign of tooth decay.
Light Brown Spots on Teeth - An early sign of a cavity.
Tooth or Mouth Pain - The area around the cavity may be tender and painful.
Sensitivity to Hot or Cold Food and Drink - When there is a cavity, hot and cold food and drinks can feel really uncomfortable or painful.
Difficulty Eating - The pain from a cavity can make it hard to eat.
Not Gaining Weight - If your toddler is having a hard time eating a balanced diet, they may not gain weight. They may also have a hard time getting the vitamins and minerals they need to thrive.
Fussiness - Some toddlers, especially young toddlers, may not be able to tell you what is wrong. They may cry, be fussy, or tug at their ear if they are in pain.
How to Treat Cavities in Toddlers
Your toddler’s dentist will recommend the best way to treat specific cavities. Dental x-rays are often used to take a close look at cavities and determine the best treatment. When a cavity is detected, preventative and restorative measures are taken to keep the decay from spreading throughout the mouth. Like kids, not all cavities are the same. It is best to personalize the cavity treatment based on the needs of the toddler and the preferences of the parent. Fillings and crowns are commonly used to treat cavities. If your toddler needs a filling to treat a cavity, the dentist removes the decay and then fills in the hole with a silver or white colored filling. A crown covers the entire tooth.
