Dental Sealants for Kids
Dental sealant for kids help prevent harmful bacteria can make their way into the grooved recesses of teeth potentially resulting in decay. The grooves on the surface of the molars (also known as pits and fissures) are prime areas for both food and bacteria to collect and settle. Dental sealants, or what we like to call “super shields”, are designed to provide an extra layer of protection on a child’s trusty molars.
Sealed with a Super Shield!
Dental sealants significantly help to reduce tooth decay in the deep grooves on the chewing surface of molars. Molars are the most susceptible teeth to decay, which is why it is recommended that children receive sealants when their six-year and twelve-year molars come in.
The process of applying a sealant is quick and painless, starting with the cleaning and drying of the tooth, applying and rinsing off an acidic gel, then painting and adhering the sealant material in the deep grooves of the tooth. Sealants are recommended for patients with a high risk of decay and those with particularly deep grooves in their molars.
The longevity and efficacy of a sealant is impacted by the oral hygiene of the child, so it is important to keep brushing and flossing and minimize exposure to sugar.
