Caring for Braces
Keeping teeth with braces clean is super important. Food particles are more likely to get stuck on teeth with braces leading to higher acid levels, bacteria growth and decay.
We partner with children and their parents to make sure they master the essentials of dental hygiene during orthodontic treatment. Kids with braces should rinse their mouths with water frequently. Water helps to not only loosen food particles but also restores the pH levels in the mouth to neutral, helping to stop any acidic foods from wearing away tooth enamel. During orthodontic treatment, we recommend brushing after every meal, making sure to brush along the gum line of each tooth and then above, below and on each bracket. Flossing is also crucial with any type of braces. Our orthodontists teach kids the best techniques for flossing and brushing with braces. Make sure to monitor your child’s oral hygiene routines after they get braces to make sure they are taking the extra time required to rinse, brush and floss around their brackets.
Foods to Avoid
Unfortunately, there are certain types of food that just don’t go well with braces. Kids need to take extra care with hard or crunchy foods that may dislodge a bracket or damage a wire. We recommend not chewing on ice, corn nuts, popcorn or hard candies. Kids should also avoid sticky, chewy foods. Caramel, taffy, chewing gum and other gooey things all pose risks to braces. In general, it is a good idea to limit intake of sugars, starches and highly acidic foods during braces treatment. Since it is more difficult to keep teeth clean with braces on, avoiding the foods that most directly contribute to decay is the best way to go. Parents can help by keeping a supply of braces-friendly food in the house and reminding kids what foods then need to avoid.
Regular Dental Cleanings a Must
Even orthodontic patients who take great care of their teeth are likely to experience higher levels of plaque build-up. Kids with braces need to get dental cleanings and exams every six months or more, depending on the Orthodontist’s recommendation.
